I came, I saw, I harvested

Naturalist & farmer Chris Gamm kindly allowed me to harvest from the youth garden at Park Ave & 25th St last Sat. I ran over to see what had survived that first snow.  Quite a bit, actually. I practically MOWED down entire plots of dinosaur kale, swiss chard, Italian (flat leaf) parsley.  I think I reaped 2 bushels of kale, 1 of parsley, 1 of chard!

Also took bunches of a purply, highly cut pointy leaf on little white stalks that tasted great, not at all bitter. I assume it’s some kind of salad green?  Can you identify it?

Consequently, I am making a LOT of parsley pesto (w/o cheese) to freeze.  The kale is wrapped up with blankets in garage. I hope it doesn’t freeze before the Locavore Dinner this coming Friday.  I and my lovely volunteer cooks will be sauteing it with garlic & lemon.  See next post for more info on this event!
